Tuesday 18th October was the official launch of Betatron - Hong Kong’s first non vertical accelerator program, providing upfront seed funding to startups.
We held the launch event at Metta and had a fantastic turnout - despite the typhoon and heavy rain! We wanted a small but intimate occasion, so we initially allocated only 30 tickets. However, after we sold out in only two days, we knew we had to increase the capacity. Luckily, Metta agreed to give us extra space and extended it the for 20 additional people!
Eunice Wong from Quikspaces, shares her story
The event kicked off with Eunice Wong, co-founder of Quikspaces, who shared her inspirational entrepreneurial journey.
Coming from a Law background, Eunice shared her struggles transitioning from a traditional ‘safe and secure’ corporate job, to the unpredictable world of launching her first venture - ‘MunchBox’.
Through hustle, dedication, and hard work with her co-founder, Jacky Lo, she managed to secure an impressive client base, including several large corporate, for their healthy snack monthly subscription box.
Her hard work paid off, as she successfully exited via an acquisition from a Malaysian competitor, who was looking to enter the Hong Kong market.
Quikspaces was her next project - the “AirBnB” of flexible workspace solutions. It’s an online platform which aggregates solutions and allows users to book coworking spaces, serviced offices, meeting rooms, and unused corporate office space in Hong Kong.
Eunice advised the audience to keep a close eye on current trends in your target market. By doing so, and noticing the rise of the ‘flexible workspace economy’, both with freelancers and corporate employees, the next stage of Quikspaces was born.
She will soon be providing a subscription platform, which allows users to pay for a monthly membership to access co-working spaces around Asia. She says, not only is this perfect for ‘Digital Nomads’, but also for corporate employees who regularly travel around the world and don’t have a dedicated workspace in each location.
Q&A with Betatron’s Founding Partners
The eagerly anticipated highlight of the event was the Q&A panel with the five founding partners of Betatron - IC Studio, Mindworks Ventures, Vectr Ventures, CoCoon Ignite Ventures, and Aria Group.
Rafal Czerniawski, the co-founder and CEO of IC Studio, moderated the panel and asked the four partner VC firm representatives intriguing questions about their investment philosophy and advice for startups in Hong Kong.
Danny Siu from Vectr Ventures, Joe Chan from Mindworks Ventures, Roland Yau from Cocoon Ignite Ventures, and Kelvin Kwong from Aria Group gave some excellent answers and useful insights to the audience.
When making an investment decision, do you focus more on the founder or the business idea?
