Each cohort we invite an 'entrepreneur' to become a 'resident' within Betatron for the four-month duration of each program. Hence the name, 'entrepreneur in residence'.
For this cohort, we're lucky to have Jah Ying Chung with us, helping our startups along their journey - with everything from sales, marketing, growth hacking, to fundraising advice.
As a local Hong Kong entrepreneur, who has successfully started and sold her previous startup, she has an incredibly valuable experience to share.
Here's a quick interview I recently did with her.
1. Welcome to the Betatron team, Jah! Tell everyone a bit about yourself...
I’m a Hong Konger (born and raised!) and founder of Launchpilots, an influencer platform connecting brands with millennials across Greater China. Last year, we expanded our product into Southeast Asia and Australia, and attracted attention from other major players in the region. At the end of 2017, we were acquired by Robin8, China’s largest influencer ecosystem.
Now if you want to know the backstory…
In my past life, I worked in the social sector (e.g. climate change, the United Nations, social enterprises) - I had never planned to be an entrepreneur myself. The turning point happened during my climate campaigning days, where I found a problem I just couldn't leave unsolved. After working with hundreds of student-run NGOs, I found that all faced incredible difficulties raising funds. As a result, I ended up spending most of my time helping them pitch for sponsorships from multinationals like Nike.
Fast forward five years later, and this initial project had grown into Launchpilots, connecting 25,000 student influencers to 2,000 brands around the world. At the end of last year, we saw an opportunity to work with Robin8 to massively scale our sponsorships to students, and so we decided to merge.
These days, I spend most of my time figuring out how to leverage my experiences to create the most impact. I’ve been 1) helping mission-driven founders scale their businesses, 2) geeking out on optimizing "daily life operations" and 3) connecting young corporate talent with impactful jobs. If you’re interested in any of these areas, please do reach out at firstname.lastname@example.org!
2. Which aspects of the startup journey will you be helping our teams with?
I primarily focus on what I dub B2B SOS: Sales, Operations and Storytelling. In the words of one of the founders I work with, I "help startups formulate ideas, make key decisions, objectify strategy decisions between founders, demonstrate the value of continuous Delegation, Automation, and Elimination of tasks as they grow and penetrate new markets, staying lean and improving time to market."
Now if you’re interested in the nitty gritty, I've written a more in-depth article about what I do as an EIR.
3. You've managed to start, launch, and sell your previous startup, Launchpilots, which is a great achievement. What did you learn from that experience?
4. You've been involved with the Hong Kong startup ecosystem for many years now, what do you think are its advantages versus other cities you've visited?
I think Hong Kong's compactness and convenience is what makes it stand out. I remember speaking with a visiting entrepreneur boasting a 9-meeting-a-day schedule in Hong Kong - something he couldn't do anywhere else in the world! If you're intentional about it, this condensed environment also enables entrepreneurs to have excellent work-life balance: gyms and studios are everywhere, hikes are 30 minutes away, affordable massages... It's quite possible to be a happy, healthy and highly productive entrepreneur - if you put in the effort!
Would you like to be our entrepreneur in residence for our next cohort?
