Review of Week 1
It's been a busy first week for the startups in cohort 2, as on Monday, they all officially moved into our new home at Naked Hub in Sheung Wan.
While from Tuesday to Thursday, we prepared our startups for the intensive four months ahead with a three-day bootcamp.
The objective of the bootcamp was to introduce the fundamental principles involved in building a successful startup to ensure all the founders were at the same stage.
Topics included KPI setting & tracking, optimizing your online presence, validating business assumptions, optimal pricing of your products/services, tracking and managing your financials, and fundraising 101.
The other main focus of the bootcamp was to work with the startups to optimize their 'elevator pitches'.
With our launch event happening tomorrow (Wednesday), we wanted to ensure they're all able to effectively articulate WHAT their startup does, WHO their target customer is, and HOW they solve this problem.
The week wasn't all hard work for our startups, as our first social event took place on Tuesday evening.
We booked out a local restaurant, Jacomax (which has great pizzas by the way!), and brought in all our founding partners and new investors to connect with our startups over pizza and an 'all you can drink' bar menu. Not surprisingly, several hangovers were visible on Wednesday!
I spoke with Nio Liyanage, our new director, about his experience so far with the teams.
He told me, "it's been an eventful and productive first week working with and getting to know the startups. It's an exceptionally strong group of founders, and their positive attitude combined with their eagerness to learn and gather feedback is very encouraging. We look forward to carrying on the strong momentum for the exciting four months ahead."
Our first public event will take place tomorrow.
During the event, we will introduce our startups, then we'll be hosting a panel discussion on the 'Startup Fundraising Ecosystem in Hong Kong'.
